Poppyland Brewery & Distillery, Cromer, Norfolk

Bespoke beer, gin, vodka and rum…
Drop in and say hello!

Poppyland Brewery, established in 2012

Poppyland Brewery occupies a small section of what was Allen’s Garage in West Street, Cromer. The brewery was set up in 2012 by Martin Warren, with the aim of producing small batches of top-quality beer, using unusual processes and ingredients to produce “different and interesting” beers.

Beer drinkers appreciate quality and they welcome something that’s rare and out of the ordinary. Beer can be bought cheaply in the supermarkets, but it is not always memorable. Poppyland beers are strong, flavoursome and have an impact.

Beer is brewed in small quantities 200 – 300 litres and either bottled or casked. All operations, from the formulation of the recipe to the design of the labels, is carried out in house.

Made in Norfolk

Poppyland beers are produced in north Norfolk, using barley grown and malted locally, plus ingredients sometimes foraged nearby, but not excluding anything from anywhere in the world.

Adventures in beer start here…

Martin retired at the end of 2018 and we took over the brewery from the beginning of 2019. We have continued to follow the philosophy that has worked so well. Our strapline ‘Adventures in beer start here…’ is as relevant now as it was in the beginning.

The brewery is run on a part-time basis; this is because we want to limit our production to high quality unusual produce and we’re not under any commercial pressure to churn beer and spirits out.

Poppyland Spirits

Towards the end of 2019 we took the decision to branch out into gin production with the view of offering gins that were as unique as our beers. Our still (Sasha) was delivered in March 2020 and production commenced in May, with the aptly named East Coast Dry Gin. Additional small batch, limited edition spirits will follow as time progresses.

Gin, vodka and rum too!

As we developed our skills in gin making we branched out into making “fruity” gins without any sugar content, concentrating on the natural sweetness of the local fruit, our Raspberry & Vanilla and our Rhubarb & Ginger being particular favourites.

Being a coastal town the call to make rum was heard loud and clear, our award winning dark rum compliments our light rum, both made from Caribbean Cane Spirit. Lastly, our botanical vodka is a testament to craft distilling!
